The old cottage smelled of sea salt and warm cookies. Twelve-year-old Leo loved visiting his Aunt Clara’s house, nestled right beside the whispering cliffs of Anchor Bay. His cousin, Maya, who was eleven, loved it too. Every morning, they would scramble down to the beach, collecting shells and smooth, grey pebbles.
“Look, Leo!” Maya exclaimed one sunny afternoon, pointing at a jagged piece of rock wedged in the cliff face. It wasn’t a shell or a pebble. It was big, about the size of a dinner plate, and had a strange, swirly pattern etched into it.
